Purpose of Activity (objectives, etc.):

The students will correctly spell selected spelling or vocabulary words.

Materials/Equipment (Needed):

  • Large Chalkboard or Dry Erase Board
  • Chalk or Dry Erase Markers
  • Four Chairs at the front of the room near the board(s)
  • List of spelling or vocabulary words

Description:

  1. Group the students into two teams (A & B). Teams should be on opposite sides of the room.
  2. Each student chooses a team member as a partner (or teacher can pair students).
  3. Two chairs are placed facing each other in front of the board on the A side and the B side. The chairs should have enough space between them so a student can stand in front of his/her chair and be able to turn and face the board while the other student is sitting.
  4. The first pair from each team comes to the board and one student sits down with a marker or chalk while his/her partner stands in front of the chair with a marker or chalk
  5. The teacher then says the spelling / vocabulary word and says "GO."
  6. The student standing writes the first letter of the word and sits down. His/her partner then stands up writes the next letter and then sits down. This continues until the word is completely spelled.
  7. If Student #1 writes the wrong letter Student #2 can erase that letter and write the correct letter but that concludes their turn. They cannot add an additional letter until their next turn.
  8. When the students believe they have spelled the word correctly they must underline the word and turn to the teacher. The teacher will let them know if the word is spelled correctly. Should an error be made in spelling the students will have a chance to fix it. The student who underlined the word may erase a portion of the word but must only rewrite one letter and sit down. The game continues as before.
  9. Students are not allowed to talk during this activity, and the first team that spells their word CLEARLY AND CORRECTLY wins a point for their team.
  10. The game continues until all pairs have had a chance at the board. The team with the most points wins the game.
