Purpose of Activity (objectives, etc.):

The students will be able to check their heart rates, compare their resting heart rate to their heart rate after walking, and running. Finally come up with a conclusion about the effects of exercise on their heart.

Materials/Equipment (Needed):

  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Stop Watch
  • Chart with Heart Rate Ranges for different ages

Description:

  1. Check their heart rate
  2. Walk in place for 2 minutes
  3. Check their heart rate again
  4. Rest for one minute
  5. Run in place for 2 minutes
  6. Check their heart rate
  7. Graph the results of the three heart rates
  8. Compare their resting heart rate to their heart rate when walking and running
  9. Write a couple of sentences to describe the effect the exercise had on their heart rate

Time:

10 minutes

Special Needs Adaptations:

Students may walk in place if they are unable to run in place
