Purpose of Activity (objectives, etc.):

This activity is a great introduction into the wonderful world of birds. Complete with a book, fun feather facts, and a game to see which team can keep the feather in the air the longest.

Materials/Equipment (Needed):

  • Book - About Birds: A Guide for Children by Cathryn Sill (Author), John Sill (Illustrator) 
  • Feather for each team (or student)

Description:

Read the book About Birds: A Guide for Children by Cathryn Sill (Author) and John Sill (Illustrator).

Share with the students some of the great information on the Functions of Feathers (download available above).

Feather Up Game:
Divide the students into teams. Give each team a feather. On signal the feather should be thrown into the air and each team should see who can keep it in the air the longest using only their breath.

Variations:
• Students should stand in a circle holding hands while attempting to keep the feather in the air.

• Play this game individually having students stand next to their desks. Give each student a feather and challenge them to see if they can keep it in the air for a full minute.

Time:

15 minutes

Special Needs Adaptations:

Teachers should watch out for hyperventilation and be aware of any children in the class who suffer from asthma.
